Restaurant Reservations in Korea: Naver Booking, Catchtable & Tabling for Travelers

Popular restaurants in Seoul and other Korean cities can have a reservation system, a same-day waitlist, both, or neither. The trick is to check the specific branch before you travel across town. In Korea, people commonly use Naver Booking (네이버 예약), Catchtable (캐치테이블), and Tabling (테이블링). They do different jobs, and what works for a Korean resident may not work the same way for a visitor without a Korean phone number.

Quick answer: Search the restaurant’s official page first. If it has a Naver reservation button and you can complete the login and payment steps, use it. For a visitor-friendly English booking flow, check Catchtable Global. For a walk-in queue, check whether the branch supports Tabling or another waitlist system. If none of these works, contact the restaurant directly or plan a walk-in at a quieter time. Never assume a requested booking is confirmed until the service shows a confirmed status.

Reservation, waitlist, or walk-in?

A reservation (예약, yeyak) holds a date and time, subject to the restaurant’s terms. A waitlist (웨이팅 or 대기, waiting/daegi) gives you a place in a queue; it is not a table booking. A walk-in means you ask for a table at the door. Many ordinary restaurants welcome walk-ins, while small, popular, tasting-menu, or peak-hour places may be difficult without planning. Check the restaurant’s own listing rather than assuming a rule applies everywhere.

How to book with Naver Booking

Open Naver Map or search Naver for the exact restaurant and branch. On its Naver Place page, look for the 예약 (Reserve) button. Not every restaurant uses Naver Booking. Choose the date, time, party size, and any seating or menu option, then read the payment and cancellation terms before submitting. Sign in if prompted. Afterward, check the booking status: a request still awaiting the restaurant’s approval is not the same as a confirmed reservation. Keep the confirmation screen or message handy. Naver’s own help explains that some reservations need business approval and that cancellation rules can vary by business.

Visitor caveat: Do not count on every Naver listing accepting a foreign phone number, overseas card, or the same login method. Requirements depend on the restaurant and checkout flow. If you cannot finish, switch to a supported alternative rather than assuming the table is held.

Catchtable Global: a useful option without a Korean number

The Korea Tourism Organization describes Catchtable Global as a visitor-facing service that supports login by Google, Apple, or email without a Korean phone number. Find the exact restaurant in the Global service, then look for Reserve. Some restaurants also offer Join Remote Waitlist; others may only allow an on-site queue. Confirm the party size, date, time, deposit, and cancellation deadline before paying or submitting. The Tourism Organization says overseas cards can be used for supported reservation deposits, but payment options should still be checked on the individual booking screen. Keep the confirmation email and follow any arrival instructions.

A remote waitlist is separate from a reservation. If a restaurant offers it, watch the live queue and be ready to arrive when called. According to the Tourism Organization’s guide, the queue number can be sent by email. A waitlist does not guarantee immediate seating.

Tabling: check the queue rules before leaving

Tabling is widely used for restaurant waiting in Korea. Search the specific branch and see whether it offers an on-site queue, remote queue, or a different booking method. A remote queue may be unavailable when the store has paused it, its remote-waiting hours have ended, or the queue is too short. Some branches require you to confirm your arrival with location or a code at the kiosk; missing this step can cancel your place. Tabling’s own help documents these differences. Check the branch’s live instructions, not just the app icon.

Visitor caveat: We have not verified a universal foreign-number signup flow for Tabling. If registration or verification does not work for you, ask the staff whether you can join the on-site queue and how they will call your number.

A simple decision plan for your first trip

  1. Pick the exact branch. Restaurants with the same name can have different hours and booking systems.
  2. Check the official restaurant page and Naver Place. Look for 예약 (reservation) or 웨이팅/대기 (waitlist), and note the phone number and address.
  3. Try a confirmed reservation if timing matters. Check Naver Booking or Catchtable Global. Read the deposit and cancellation policy.
  4. If no table is available, check the queue. See whether Catchtable Global or Tabling supports remote waiting for that branch. Confirm any arrival step.
  5. Keep a backup. A nearby walk-in restaurant or an earlier/later meal time is safer than relying on an unconfirmed request.

What to say at the restaurant

  • 예약했어요. Yeyakhaesseoyo. — I have a reservation.
  • [Name] 이름으로 예약했어요. [Name] ireumeuro yeyakhaesseoyo. — The booking is under [Name].
  • 두 명이에요. Du myeong-ieyo. — There are two of us. (Change the number as needed.)
  • 웨이팅 어떻게 해요? Waiting eotteoke haeyo? — How do I join the waitlist?
  • 얼마나 기다려야 해요? Eolmana gidaryeoya haeyo? — How long is the wait?

Showing the confirmation screen is often easier than reading out a name. Arrive on time, use the same party size you booked, and cancel promptly if plans change. Deposits and no-show fees depend on the restaurant’s terms; read them before confirming. If the app says to check in at a kiosk or with the host, do that even if you joined the queue remotely.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Korean phone number to book a restaurant?

Not always. Catchtable Global is documented by the Korea Tourism Organization as allowing Google, Apple, or email login without a Korean phone number. Other services and individual restaurants may ask for local verification. Check the actual booking screen.

Is Tabling a reservation?

Usually the relevant Tabling feature is a waitlist, not a guaranteed time slot. Some restaurants may show other options, so read the branch’s listing carefully.

Can I just walk in?

Often, yes, especially outside peak meal times. A popular restaurant may still have a long queue or require reservations. Check the exact restaurant before traveling there.

What if my Naver request says pending?

Treat it as unconfirmed until the restaurant or booking service changes it to a confirmed status. Have another dining option ready.
