Tax Refund in Korea for Tourists: Receipts, Refund Desks, and Airport Steps

When you shop in Korea, some participating stores can refund the domestic tax on eligible goods to qualifying visitors. At checkout, ask whether the store offers a tourist tax refund and keep the refund documents. Some shops deduct the refund immediately; other purchases require you to claim it later at a city counter, airport kiosk, or refund desk. The steps and limits depend on which method the shop uses.

This guide covers goods bought in stores, not hotel stays or duty-free purchases. It uses current English guidance from VISITKOREA and Incheon Airport; follow the instructions printed on your refund voucher and the signs at your departure airport.

Before you pay: check the store and refund method

Look for a participating “Tax Free” or tax-refund shop and ask before paying. Bring your passport: stores may need to check eligibility and issue the required refund paperwork. Keep the sales receipt and any refund voucher together. A normal receipt alone may not be enough to claim a refund.

Basic eligibility for goods

Current VISITKOREA guidance says the goods tax-refund scheme is for non-residents who do not earn income in Korea. Foreign visitors staying for up to six months may qualify; the purchase must be at least ₩15,000, and the goods must be taken out of Korea within three months. Opened or used goods and duty-free purchases are not eligible for this refund. Overseas Koreans and accommodation refunds have separate eligibility rules, so check the official guidance if either applies to you.

There are two broad ways to receive the refund:

  • Immediate refund at checkout: At participating stores, the tax is deducted from the purchase when you pay after your passport is checked. VISITKOREA’s current guide lists a minimum purchase of ₩15,000, a single transaction below ₩1,000,000, and a trip total of no more than ₩5,000,000 for this method. Store participation and individual eligibility still apply.
  • Refund after purchase: The shop gives you a refund voucher or instructions. You later process it at an eligible city counter, airport kiosk or refund desk, or through a method listed by the operator. Keep the voucher and follow its instructions; procedures vary by provider and airport.

Do not assume a store can refund every item or combine separate purchases. Ask the cashier which method applies and what documents you need before leaving the shop.

Keep your refund items accessible

At departure, customs may ask to confirm that refund-eligible goods are being taken out of Korea. Incheon Airport’s instructions say that if the kiosk requests an inspection, you may need to show your passport, purchased items in unopened and unused condition, and purchase confirmation. Keep the items and paperwork accessible until the refund process is complete.

If refund goods are in your carry-on, keep them with your paperwork and follow the kiosk instructions. For checked goods, Incheon Airport says to tell airline staff at check-in, have the bag tagged for customs inspection, reclaim it, and visit the kiosk. After customs clearance, place the bag on the large-baggage conveyor beside the customs desk. If inspection is requested, show your passport, goods, and purchase confirmation. Follow staff directions because procedures may vary by terminal.

Claiming a refund at Incheon Airport

The airport’s current process has three stages: shop, check in and complete any customs declaration, then process the domestic tax refund. For after-purchase refunds, the practical sequence is:

  1. Keep your passport, boarding pass, refund voucher, and goods ready. Finish check-in steps as instructed, but do not send refund goods into checked baggage without following the airport’s inspection procedure.
  2. Go to the departure-hall refund kiosk or customs desk. Scan your passport or present the documents requested. If the kiosk directs you to customs inspection, show the required goods and purchase confirmation.
  3. After customs clearance, complete the refund. Follow signs to the appropriate kiosk or service counter in your terminal. Refund counters, operating hours, and accepted providers can vary, so check the airport’s live information before you travel.

Allow extra time for customs inspection, reclaiming checked goods, and placing cleared baggage on the airport-directed conveyor; these steps can add time to a busy departure.

Once you have passed departure immigration into the duty-free area, Incheon Airport says you cannot return to the public area. Complete any refund steps that require the departure hall first.

Immediate refund vs. airport refund

MethodWhen you receive itWhat to keep in mind
Immediate refundAt a participating store’s checkoutCheck eligibility and current transaction and trip limits before paying
Refund after purchaseAt an approved counter, kiosk, or provider methodKeep the voucher; goods may need customs export confirmation or inspection

If you are unsure, ask the store which method was used and whether you need to visit customs at departure. An immediate deduction at checkout does not mean you can ignore export or inspection instructions printed on your documents.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the shop without the refund voucher or required tax-refund paperwork.
  • Assuming every branch participates or that every product qualifies.
  • Packing refund goods in checked luggage before checking the airport’s process.
  • Using an old blog’s kiosk location or opening hours; these can change by terminal and service provider.
  • Waiting until the final minutes before boarding. Follow your airline’s check-in deadline and leave time for customs and refund queues.

FAQ

What is the minimum purchase for a tourist tax refund in Korea?

Current VISITKOREA guidance lists purchases of ₩15,000 or more for refund eligibility. For immediate refunds, it also lists a per-transaction cap below ₩1,000,000 and a trip-total cap of ₩5,000,000. Requirements differ by refund method and can change, so check current official rules and the store’s instructions.

Do I need my passport when shopping?

Yes, bring it. Stores may need your passport to verify eligibility and issue refund documents, especially for immediate refunds.

Do I need to show the goods at the airport?

You may. Incheon Airport says customs inspection can be required; if the kiosk requests it, present your passport, purchased goods in unopened and unused condition, and purchase confirmation. Follow current airport directions for carry-on or checked goods.

Can I receive the refund after leaving Korea?

Some providers offer methods that are processed after departure, but the available process and timing depend on the refund operator and your voucher. Follow the provider’s current instructions and keep a copy of the documents until the refund arrives.
