How to Use a Korean Coin Laundry: Machines, Detergent, and Payment

A Korean self-service laundromat is often labeled 셀프빨래방 (self-service laundry) or 코인세탁 (coin laundry). Despite the name, not every shop uses coins: some use a central kiosk, a store card, or another payment method. Read the instructions at that specific shop before loading a machine, because detergent, payment, and cycle steps vary by operator.

Find the right kind of laundry shop

Search a map app for 셀프빨래방 or 코인세탁. A self-service shop lets you operate washers and dryers yourself. A 세탁소 is usually a staffed cleaner or laundry service; ask about turnaround time if you need it back before checkout.

Check the listing and entrance for current opening hours and machine availability. Do not assume every location is open 24 hours or has English instructions.

A historical contrast: Today’s self-service laundromats are only one part of Korea’s laundry story. These stone steps are at the historic Wonseo-dong Public Laundry Site in Seoul; this is heritage context, not a modern coin laundry.

Before you start

  • Separate delicate, dark, and light clothes as you normally would; check each garment’s care label.
  • Empty pockets and remove anything that could damage clothes or a machine.
  • Choose a washer large enough for the load. Bulky bedding needs more room than a small travel load.
  • Look for the store’s posted rules and payment kiosk. If the steps are unclear, use a translation app or ask the attendant if one is available.

How to wash

  1. Choose an available washer. Check capacity and any restrictions posted on the machine.
  2. Read detergent instructions. Some laundromats automatically dispense detergent; others sell packets or require you to bring your own. Do not add detergent unless the machine or shop instructions say to.
  3. Load clothes without overfilling. Leave room for the drum to move. Select a suitable cycle and temperature based on garment labels and the machine’s options.
  4. Pay as instructed. The shop may use coins, a central kiosk, a reloadable store card, or another method. Some kiosks have language options; availability differs.
  5. Start the machine and note the finish time. Set a timer so you can return promptly when the cycle ends.

Drying and laundry etiquette

After washing, transfer the load to a dryer if you need one. Drying is commonly a separate paid step, but pricing and controls are location-specific. Read the heat and time options carefully; air-drying delicate items may be safer than a hot cycle.

When the cycle ends, collect your clothes and clear the machine for the next person. Keep the area tidy, do not leave a load unattended longer than necessary, and follow posted rules about shoes, pet items, rugs, or bulky bedding. Store policies differ, so the sign at the shop takes precedence over a general guide.

Useful Korean phrases

  • 세제는 자동으로 들어가나요? — Is detergent added automatically?
  • 카드로 결제할 수 있나요? — Can I pay by card?

  • 이 기계 사용법을 알려주실 수 있나요? — Could you show me how to use this machine?

Quick checklist

  1. Search for 셀프빨래방 and confirm the location is self-service.
  2. Check shop hours, machine capacity, and posted restrictions.
  3. Confirm whether detergent is automatic, sold on-site, or bring-your-own.
  4. Read the payment steps before starting; do not assume “coin” means coins only.
  5. Set a timer, return promptly, and check pockets before washing.

It depends on the operator and machine. Some automatically dispense it, some sell detergent, and others expect you to bring it. Check the instructions before adding anything.
