Planning a first trip to South Korea? Your total depends mainly on accommodation, meal style, city changes, and paid activities. The totals below are calculated from disclosed allowances for one traveler, not a survey of typical spending. They exclude airport and intercity transport, international flights, shopping, and other extras listed below.

What this estimate includes
- Accommodation: days minus one paid night in the example table; replace with your actual room quote and nights.
- Food: ordinary meals and drinks for each travel day.
- Local transport: routine city transit; price airport and intercity journeys separately for the routes you will take.
- Paid attractions and a small contingency buffer.
Important: These are planning ranges, not guaranteed prices. Recheck accommodation, transport, and attraction prices for your travel dates. Weekend and peak-season stays can cost more.
South Korea travel budget by trip length
Reproducible planning scenarios, not market averages. These examples cover one adult paying for a room alone, staying in one base city, with departure on the final day. Days and nights are counted separately: 3 days means 2 nights, 5 means 4, 7 means 6, and 10 means 9. The room, meal, and activity amounts are self-selected allowances—not live quotes, researched average prices, or a record of personal spending. Replace them with your own quotes.
Inputs used for every scenario
| Input (per person) | Lower allowance | Middle allowance | Higher allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room / night | ₩40,000–₩80,000 | ₩100,000–₩160,000 | ₩200,000–₩300,000 |
| Meals / day | ₩20,000–₩30,000 | ₩35,000–₩55,000 | ₩60,000–₩100,000 |
| Activities / day | ₩5,000–₩10,000 | ₩10,000–₩20,000 | ₩20,000–₩40,000 |
| City transit / day | ₩6,200 (4 separate base-fare rides) | ₩6,200 (4 separate base-fare rides) | ₩6,200 (4 separate base-fare rides) |
| Contingency | 10% of subtotal | 10% of subtotal | 10% of subtotal |
The transit input uses the official adult subway card base fare of ₩1,550, rechecked October 1, 2026. Four rides here means four separately charged, base-distance journeys—not four discounted transfer segments. Distance supplements, taxis, airport trains, and other cities need separate calculations.
Formula: subtotal = nights × room allowance + days × (meal allowance + ₩6,200 + activity allowance). Add 10% contingency, then round up to the next ₩1,000. Each range uses all lower inputs at its lower end and all higher inputs at its higher end; it is not a confidence interval.
Calculated totals (KRW, per person)
| Days / nights | Lower allowance | Middle allowance | Higher allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days / 2 nights | ₩191,000–₩329,000 | ₩389,000–₩620,000 | ₩725,000–₩1,143,000 |
| 5 days / 4 nights | ₩348,000–₩607,000 | ₩722,000–₩1,151,000 | ₩1,355,000–₩2,125,000 |
| 7 days / 6 nights | ₩505,000–₩884,000 | ₩1,055,000–₩1,682,000 | ₩1,984,000–₩3,106,000 |
| 10 days / 9 nights | ₩740,000–₩1,301,000 | ₩1,554,000–₩2,478,000 | ₩2,929,000–₩4,579,000 |
Check one result: 3-day lower-allowance minimum = (2 × ₩40,000) + 3 × (₩20,000 + ₩6,200 + ₩5,000) = ₩173,600. Add ₩17,360 contingency = ₩190,960; rounded up, that is ₩191,000.
Add separately: airport transfers in each direction, intercity tickets or domestic flights, SIM/eSIM, transit-card purchase cost, insurance, shopping, visa-related costs, and international flights. These are excluded from the table. If two people share a room, divide only the actual room cost—not meals, individual fares, or admissions—and recalculate the buffer. Extra nights or city changes invalidate the one-base-city assumptions.
Seoul, Busan, or Jeju: what changes the budget?
Seoul
Seoul is easiest to budget with one hotel base and a transportation card. The Seoul Metropolitan Government lists a 1,550 KRW adult subway card base fare; distance, transfer, and early-morning rules apply separately.
Busan
Busan can work well as a second base, but coastal routes may add time and taxi costs. Keep a separate local-transport buffer instead of assuming every trip is a short subway ride.
Jeju
Jeju usually needs a larger transport allowance. Compare public buses, taxis, and rental-car costs for your exact itinerary. Rental eligibility, insurance, fuel, and seasonal demand must be checked separately.
Build a budget from actual nights and tickets
Adjust the scenario when your trip is different
| Your plan | What to recalculate |
|---|---|
| Two people share one room. | Divide the actual room total between them, but keep each person’s meals, transport and activity tickets separate. |
| You visit more than one city. | Add each intercity train or flight once, plus the journey to and from each station or airport. Allow for transfer-day meals and local travel. |
| You choose Jeju without a rental car. | Price the specific bus or taxi legs in your itinerary; do not reuse the Seoul subway allowance as if it covered the island. |
| You travel over a weekend or holiday. | Replace the sample nightly rate with live quotes for your exact dates before relying on the total. |
The table above is a worked comparison, not a price quote. Keep your cash-and-card plan separate from this whole-trip budget.
The trip-length totals above follow the disclosed scenario inputs and formula, not a quote or an official national average. A travel day is not automatically a hotel night: price your actual room nights and count airport and intercity tickets once for the journeys you will take. Weekday, weekend, and peak-season room rates can differ, so use the dates and room type you are actually considering.
For a trip-specific estimate, add these items rather than multiplying hotel prices by the number of days:
- Accommodation: quoted room price per night × actual nights ÷ the number of people sharing the room.
- Meals: your planned daily food allowance × travel days. Use local menu prices as a check, not a promise of what every restaurant charges.
- City transit: estimated rides × current fare; add extra for long-distance fares, taxis, or late-night trips.
- Airport and intercity trips: add the actual one-way or return tickets separately. Do not count an airport transfer every day.
- Activities and extras: add admission, reservations, luggage storage, SIM/eSIM, shopping, and any other items that matter to your trip.
Separate example: 3 Seoul days, 2 hotel nights, and one airport ticket
This separate example uses different chosen allowances from the scenario table and does not include its 10% buffer. It is arithmetic for one traveler, not a recommended or typical price: room at ₩100,000 × 2 nights = ₩200,000; meals at a self-selected ₩30,000/day × 3 days = ₩90,000; four base-fare subway rides/day × ₩1,550 × 3 days = ₩18,600; plus one AREX ride to Terminal 1 at ₩18,100. The subtotal is ₩326,700, before paid attractions, shopping, taxis, or any return airport trip. If two people split that room equally, divide the room cost by two before adding each person’s own meals and transport. Longer rides, transfers, and special airport services can change the transport total.
For a quick live food-price comparison, the Korea Consumer Agency’s Price Comparison service shows surveyed menu prices by region; it notes that values are provisional and may vary from actual shop prices. Check your destination and meal choices before relying on any estimate.
Airport arrival cost
AREX’s published passenger terms list the adult one-way Seoul Station–Incheon Airport express fare as ₩18,100 to Terminal 1 and ₩18,700 to Terminal 2. Add one fare for each direction you actually use; confirm the live ticket screen before purchase because fares and promotions can change. Incheon Airport’s taxi guidance lists a ₩4,800 Seoul taxi base fare and late-night surcharges; this is not a complete airport-to-city fare estimate.
How to keep your Korea trip affordable
- Use one accommodation base before adding a second city.
- Use a transportation card and check transfer rules.
- Separate paid attractions into their own daily line.
- Keep a buffer for weather, luggage storage, and last-minute airport transport.
- Recheck official prices on the day you book.
Frequently asked questions
Is Korea expensive for a first-time visitor?
Korea can fit different budgets. Accommodation and the number of city changes usually move the total more than ordinary subway rides.
Should I budget in Korean won?
Yes. Keep your working sheet in KRW, then convert to your home currency on the day you book. Exchange rates change and are not a travel-price estimate.
Does this include flights?
No. International flights vary by origin, season, and baggage rules, so they are excluded.
