Looking for beads, yarn or sewing supplies in Seoul? Start by deciding whether you want materials to make something yourself, a finished handmade gift, or a workshop. Those are three different shopping trips. Dongdaemun Shopping Complex is the materials-focused starting point; Ssamzigil in Insadong is a better starting point for browsing finished crafts and asking about hands-on experiences.
Quick facts
- Materials: Dongdaemun Shopping Complex (동대문종합시장), 266 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu
- Fabric and garment materials 08:00–18:00 · accessory materials 09:30–19:00 · both closed Sundays
- Finished crafts and workshops: Ssamzigil (쌈지길), 44 Insadong-gil, general hours 10:30–20:30
- Check the sales unit (piece, strand or packet) and the total before paying
- Confirm a workshop’s collection time before booking — a piece may not be ready the same day
- Last checked: October 25, 2026
This guide is for a visitor buying a small personal project, not a wholesale order. It is a researched planning guide, not a claim that we visited every stall or tested a particular kit. Information checked October 25, 2026; individual shops, stock and holiday notices can change.
Choose the right kind of craft shopping
| Your goal | Start here | What to establish first |
|---|---|---|
| Beads, clasps and jewelry parts | Dongdaemun Shopping Complex | Small-quantity sales, price per piece or pack, matching connectors |
| Fabric, sewing thread and garment trims | Dongdaemun Shopping Complex | Material, width, minimum cutting length and unit of sale |
| A complete embroidery or crochet kit | Ask a specialist seller before traveling | Whether it includes instructions, tools and every required material |
| A finished handmade souvenir or a craft activity | Ssamzigil | Workshop availability, language, price and collection time |
A market full of thread is not proof that a particular beginner embroidery kit is stocked. Bring a reference image and the exact technique you want. If your project requires an English pattern, verify that separately rather than assuming a translated product name means translated instructions.

Dongdaemun: go to the materials market, not just “the night market”
Save the Korean name 동대문종합시장 in your map. The Korea Tourism Organization listing places the complex at 266 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu. Different buildings and entrances can have different address pins; match the complex name rather than following an unrelated fashion mall with “Dongdaemun” in its name.
The surrounding district contains many shopping buildings. An evening clothing-market plan is not a reliable plan for daytime fabric and accessory suppliers. The complex’s own hours page lists fabric and garment materials at 08:00–18:00 and accessory materials at 09:30–19:00, both closed Sundays. It separately lists limited Sunday trading for some home and wedding goods; that is not a promise that bead or fabric sellers are open. Second and fourth Sundays are full closures.
For a first visit, a Monday-to-Saturday late-morning or early-afternoon session is a practical planning choice, not a guarantee of each stall’s attendance. Check the operator’s current notices for national holidays and seasonal breaks. Do not arrive at the final advertised hour with a project that needs several matched components.
Use the operator’s floor guide and store search before wandering. The diagrams may require image viewing and Korean text. Save the building letter, floor and shop number once you find a useful seller; “the bead shop upstairs” is not enough to find it again.
A small-project buying method that avoids unusable souvenirs
- Write a short bill of materials. For a bracelet, list beads, elastic or wire, fasteners and any tools. For fabric, note the finished size and seam allowance before discussing the quantity to cut.
- Check the sales unit. One displayed bead, a strand and a sealed packet can represent different prices. Ask for the total for your actual quantity before paying.
- Check compatibility together. Show the cord and bead to the same seller and ask whether the cord passes through the hole. Match clasps and findings before leaving the area.
- Buy enough of a matching material. If color matching matters, compare pieces together under the same light. A later purchase may not be an exact match.
- Photograph the purchase only with permission. A product photo, receipt and shop number can help with a return visit. The complex has a filming-cooperation process; do not treat a public shop as unrestricted commercial filming space.
Keep payment flexible. Ask whether your card is accepted and whether a minimum quantity applies at that stall. Neither a tourism directory nor one successful purchase proves every independent seller has the same payment or retail policy. Our cash and card guide covers the wider travel setup.

Ssamzigil: finished crafts and activity questions
For someone who wants to browse makers’ work without assembling a materials list, search 쌈지길, 44 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu. The official tourism listing describes craft shops and some craft experiences and lists general hours of 10:30–20:30. Individual workshops need separate confirmation; general mall opening does not mean every class is running.

Before paying for a workshop, ask four things: can you join at your arrival time, can instruction be understood in your language, when can the object be collected, and can it travel home safely? A pottery or finishing process may not fit a departure-day schedule. Do not assume “make your own” means take it away immediately.
If you have only one afternoon, choose either materials shopping or a confirmed craft activity. Trying to fit both around a timed palace entry creates avoidable pressure. If visiting both areas, allow a separate transfer buffer and check your actual route in Naver Map; no fixed door-to-door time is promised here.
Before leaving your accommodation
- Save the Korean destination name and the correct building pin.
- Bring a project photo, quantity list and a small reusable bag.
- Check that the day is not a relevant closure or holiday.
- Confirm kit contents, sales unit and total price before purchase.
- Check your airline and departure-airport rules before carrying scissors, needles, liquids or adhesives; do not assume every craft tool belongs in cabin baggage.
